The Iceland Airport Transit Visa may be required if you have to pass through Iceland on the way to your destination country

An Iceland Airport Transit Visa is an Iceland short stay visa, which allows you to transit through an Iceland airport.

If you need to land at an Iceland airport, only to transit to your non-Schengen destination country, then you may need to apply for an Airport visa prior to taking a flight.

Iceland Airport Transit Visa Exemptions

If you hold a passport of one of the countries, the nationals of which are in need of an Iceland Airport Transit visa, you may still be exempt from this requirement. You will be waived from the requirement of an Iceland Airport Transit Visa if:

  • You hold a valid uniform visa, national long-stay visa or a residence permit issued by an EU/EEA country.
  • You are a third-country national and you hold a valid residence permit issued by Andorra, Canada, Japan, San Marino or the United States of America, which guarantees your unconditional readmission.
  • You are a third-country national and you hold a valid visa for Canada, Japan or the United States of America.
  • You are a family member of citizens of the EU, as referred to in Article 1(2)(a) of the Visa Code.
  • You are a flight crewmember on duty and you are a national of a contracting party to the Chicago Convention on International Civil Aviation (ICAO).

Iceland Airport Transit Visa Application

The procedure to complete the Iceland Airport Transit Visa application process goes as follows:

  1. Check if you need an Airport Transit Visa.
  2. Figure out when and where you need to apply.
  3. Fill in the application form for an Icelandic visa.
  4. Collect the required documents.
  5. Schedule an appointment for visa interview.
  6. Attend the interview with all the required documents with you.
  7. Wait for the processing of your visa.

Do I need an Airport Transit visa for Iceland?

You will need to apply for an Iceland Airport Transit Visa if you are a passport holder of one of the following countries:

  • Afghanistan.
  • Bangladesh.
  • Democratic Republic of the Congo.
  • Eritrea.
  • Ethiopia.
  • Ghana.
  • Iran.
  • Iraq.
  • Nigeria.
  • Pakistan.
  • Somalia.
  • Sri Lanka.

Please note that if the country you are planning to visit is a Schengen country, and you hold a regular short-stay visa to that country, then you do not need to apply for an Airport Transit visa. Your short stay visa enables you to transit through any Iceland airport with an international area.

In addition, you will need to apply for a short-stay visa instead of an Iceland Airport Transit Visa if:

  • you have to land at more than one airport within the Schengen Area
  • your plane ticket to your destination country does not have a fixed date
  • you have to pick up your luggage and/or have to check-in again

What documents should I submit?

There are some required documents for an Iceland Airport Transit Visa you will need to submit, on the day of your interview. The requirements for an Airport Visa to Iceland are as follows:

  • Airport Transit Visa Application form. The form for an Airport Transit Visa is the same as for a Schengen Visa. Complete this form by giving in all the required information, which is about you and your intended trip to Iceland. Print the form in two copies, and sign both of them at the end.
  • Two photos. Submit two recent photos, which are taken according to the Schengen Visa photo requirements.
  • Valid passport. You will need to submit your passport alongside with the rest of the required documents. Your passport must have at least two blank pages, and validity of three more months beyond your intended stay in Iceland, minimally. Make sure it has been issued within the last ten years, as well.
  • Documents proving your purpose of onward travel:
    • Ticket to your final destination
    • Visa to your destination country, if applicable
  • Travel Medical Insurance. You will need to purchase insurance that covers any health incident you may face within the Schengen Area with a minimum of €30,000.
  • Proof of civil status. This could be your birth certificate, marriage certificate etc.
  • Proof of paid visa fee.

How much does it cost to apply for the Iceland Transit Visa?

The fee for an Iceland Airport Transit Visa is €60. The fee is non-refundable in case your visa application is rejected, or you decide to withdraw your application while it is being processed.
